CAR ROUTES
To reach the Amalfi Coast there are a number of available routes, mainly going via Meta di Sorrento or via Salerno. There are also some alternative routes via Agerola and via the Valico di Chiunzi, however these roads are not always in a very good state, with very little lighting at night and high chance of finding snow during winter time. For those having their first experience driving in Italy, it's advisable to take the standard routes via Salerno/Sorrento.
CAR ROUTES FROM NAPLES
CAR ROUTES FROM NAPLES to AMALFI COAST via META DI SORRENTO
This route is advisable especially for those travelling to Positano (57,3 Km - 1h 15') and Praiano (63 Km - 125' ).
Directions: From Naples take A3 motorway to Salerno (21 K)
Exit at Castellammare di Stabia
Continue towards Meta di Sorrento.
From Meta di Sorrento follow directions your destination.
CAR ROUTES FROM NAPLES to AMALFI COAST via VIETRI Sul MARE
This route is the easiest way to get to the Eastern towns of the Amalfi Coast from Vietri sul Mare (51 Km – 51 min) to Amalfi (71,9 – 1h23’). Most of the journey is on the National Motorway, making it quite a pleasant and easy drive, however after Vietri Sul Mare, the route continues on the famously winding and narrow Amalfi Coast Road ss163, which especially in summer can be quite crowded and even narrower than usual.
Directions: From Naples take the A3 motorway to Salerno (Km 46,6)
Exit at Vietri sul Mare.
Continue on the SS163 to go to final destination.
CAR ROUTES FROM NAPLES to AMALFI COAST via AGEROLA
This route is one of the alternative solutions to reach the Amalfi Coast from above, across the Mounts Lattari. Going via Agerola is useful especially to go to Furore and Conca Dei Marini which both have the high part of the village right by Agerola’s ss366 road. However this route can be quite hazardous, as it is rather winding, badly lit at night, and in winter it is very often covered with snow.
Directions: From Naples take A3 motorway to Salerno (21 K)
Take the exit Castellammare di Stabia to get to SS145
Continue on SS145 (6KM)
Exit on SPexSS366 follow directions to Gragnano, Pimonte, Agerola and then Furore, Conca dei Marini and the other towns on the Coast.
CAR ROUTE FROM ROME
From Rome (280 Km - 3 h ca), there is one direct way to Naples on the A1 National Motorway and from here the same rules apply as for above. If your destination is on the Western part of the Coast, than the advised route is via Meta di Sorrento, otherwise if you have to go East via Vietri sul Mare, with the exception of Furore and Conca dei Marini where the preferred route is via Agerola.
Directions: Take A1 motorway to NAPOLI (177 Km)
Exit on the A30 to SALERNO
Choose to exit at
Castellammare di Stabia (21 Km, to Positano and Praiano) and to continue to Agerola
or
Vietri sul Mare (44,8 Km)
Please note: The Amalfi Coast main road the SS163, is a very winding and narrow road, where locals drive very comfortably large trucks and buses, that means speeding quite a bit and being used to reverse mode driving to make space for one another along the way.
If you have chosen to visit the Coast by car, be aware that it takes some time to get accustomed to it, and a very important rule is never to stress or panic when you have a bus coming your way on a seemingly one way road. It isn't one way, and if you stay still, and just do what they tell you NTO, you'll manage to actually make it to destination!
Be careful! Have fun!
